Born and raised in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Nyamitse-Calvin "Nyame" Mahinda grew up in a family that never waited for opportunity — they built it. For Mahinda, this systemic gap became deeply personal. His mother lost her life navigating the complexities of the U.S. healthcare system, an environment with some of the world's most advanced technology, yet one that remains agonizingly difficult to navigate during a crisis. Years later, he watched his sister confront those same failures while living with epilepsy. He witnessed a painfully familiar reality: navigating fragmented care, fighting to be heard, and carrying the burden of an infrastructure that defaults responsibility onto patients precisely when they are most vulnerable.
Those experiences transformed Mahinda's grief into purpose. He realized healthcare inequality is not just a global divide, but a local crisis where life-saving expertise sits mere miles away from the people who cannot reach it. This realization sparked the core question behind Vital Audio: what if meaningful health insights could begin with something nearly every person already possesses, their voice?
To answer this, Mahinda and his team built Sonometrik to translate voice into standard vital signs and health information. The technology challenges the assumption that health data requires specialized hardware or proximity to a major medical center. Mahinda applied this innovation to heart and lung diseases first. These conditions kill more people worldwide than all cancers combined, yet they are highly survivable if caught early.
Under Mahinda's leadership, Vital Audio has translated that vision into massive industry traction, establishing commercial partnerships with Mayo Clinic, NYU Langone, Cone Health, leading digital health entities, and major telecommunications companies. While his technology is validated alongside these elite institutions, clinical success is just his baseline. Within five years, Vital Audio aims to be the default biomarker infrastructure layer for standard vital-sign data in healthcare, replacing the home blood-pressure cuff and embedding itself inside health systems, payers, and telehealth platforms.
